Active in the British 80's nu pop scene. Brilliant were formed when Killing Joke's Martin Glover (Youth) left his previous group. Along with Ben Watkins (later, Juno Reactor) and Jimmy Cauty (later the one half of The KLF) they started the group, releasing singles from 1982 to 1984. The first line up was completed with Marcus Myers and Guy Pratt, later in Icehouse. In their first four years of their existence,  they hosted a roster of over 30 musicians! The final line-up found them as a trio   with June Montana at vocals, later a one-hit wonder dance diva with which they released their sole album with a Stock, Aitken & Waterman production. Among their hits were James Brown's "It's A Man's World" and the 1963 hit for Skeeter Davis, "The End Of The World".

Transit Kings

The 'Transit Kings' are a British electronic music group consisting of Alex Paterson and Jimmy Cauty, inventors of Ambient House (later to become The Orb and The KLF),

Guy Pratt (long time post-waters Pink Floyd bassist, occasional Orb contributor and

renowned session player) and Dom Beken artists (programmer/producer,

Orb contributor and long time collaborator and assistant to Guy)

met at Gunpoint (the studio built by Guy and Dom) at London’s Townhouse Studios.
Cauty left the band in 2004 to work on other projects; the official website has him listed as on

"Co-Pilot (on extended leave): Graybeard". He is, however, listed as a composer on

seven of the Transit Kings' debut album's twelve tracks

In 2002 Jimmy Cauty and James Fogarty launched BLACKSMOKE, followed in 2003 with the 'Post Terrorist Modernism' EP.

BLACKSMOKE also completed some remixes (The Dandy Warhols, A-ha, The (International) Noise Conspiracy, Emperor, The Bloodhound Gang, Goldie Lookin Chain, Les Six, Cradle of Filth and remixed the theme for the film 'Herbie : Fully Loaded...).

In 2005, Jimmy left BLACKSMOKE in to create Stamps (of Mass Destruction) and post-apocalyptic dioramas, and James continued project alone - but changed name to The Blacksmoke Organisation. In 2007, James suspended all musical activity for BLACKSMOKE.
In 2021, James reactivated BLACKSMOKE in order to create some new original music along with Thomas Touzimsky and other collaborators.

P.S. Although James wrote the music for the post-BLACKSMOKE project 'Danger Global Warming project', this is not BLACKSMOKE material, and neither are any subsequent remixes - these should be attributed to The Blacksmoke Organisation, which features no founding members of BLACKSMOKE.

  Notes, Credits, Companies Etc...

  Notes:

  • BLACKSMOKE was the collaboration between James Cauty (artist and acid house music innovator with KLF, The Orb et al) underground musician James Fogarty (In The Woods, Old Forest, Ewigkeit etc) and was a collision of Metal/Rock and Electronic music ; think ‘Motorhead meets Prodigy’. Cauty quit in 2006 to concentrate on art, and James put the project into hiatus in 2008. This is the first time this release is available in physical format (to be followed soon by new music). The tape version includes the 2008 Drum’n’Bass remix of the track ‘I Am The Black Wizards‘ by Black Metal legends Emperor

  • This “Official Bootleg” comes to you courtesy of German underground cassette label Ab Art Prod.

  Notes:

The Post-Terrorist Modernism EP was a free 4-track EP released by Jimmy Cauty and James Fogarty as The Blacksmoke Organization in November 2003.

During 2003 the self-titled “occasional art collective and musical group” had already shared various tracks for download through their website. The EP was first teased when Blacksmoke released Silent Night, another free track released on 11 Sep 2003 as a response to the second anniversary of 9-11.

We have just done an EP called ‘Fuck the Fucking Fuckers’. It is a concept EP, the concept being fuck America basically and fuck weapons of mass destruction. It is like a protest record. It is the kind of record that you would want to put on if you are going to go out on a riot. We do feel quite angry about what has been going on with the war.
Jimmy Cauty (Undercover.com.au, 11 Sep 2003)

Following a 15-minute Breezeblock session broadcast on BBC Radio 1 in September they released their renamed Post-Terrorist Modernism EP free of charge two months later.

The EP included previously released tracks USA USA and Fuck The Fucking Fuckers (a remix of Gimpo Gimpo as performed at the M25 London Orbital event) along new track Blacksmoke Rising of which early bits and pieces had been hidden throughout the official Blacksmoke website. Also featured on the release is an alternate version of Silent Night which had been cut from the aforementioned BBC session, probably to not upset listeners.

The download for Post-Terrorist Modernism also included printable covers and CD labels, allowing listeners to create their own physical version. The cover art of an exploding Big Ben was also released separately, causing a stir in a couple of British newspapers.

The EP can still be downloaded from Archive.org for free. A limited edition of 50 cassette tapes got re-released in April 2021, including a remix of Emperor’s ‘I Am The Black Wizards’.

This version cut to lathe vinyl because it should be.

Bonus Track

The Hurdy Gurdy Song is a deep drone heard through time.
It is a masterpiece of psycho-cosmology that fuses the ancient music of the British Isles with the frenetic sound of the present.
It is the sound of euphoria and melancholia, locked together in constant battle that neither wants to win.
It is an elemental sound, like a sped up version of this country’s weather.
It is an anthem of disruption, of playful provocation and sonic sedition.
It is relentless and restless, like all good music should be.
It sings down through all eternity, the crying of humanity.
It channels the two greatest forms of folk music this country has produced: that of the peasant’s lyre and drum’n’bass.

“A brutal whiplash of junglist breakbeats and the bagpipe-like sound of the ancient hand-cranked hurdy-gurdy.” Mojo

Jem Finer and Jimmy Cauty’s Local Psycho and the Hurdy-Gurdy Orchestra have released their debut single The Hurdy-Gurdy Song on 12” vinyl and via streaming/download platforms. As well as the original, The Hurdy-Gurdy Song now comes backed with a trio of new mixes, and new artwork by Jimmy Cauty.

The Back to the 90s mix has all of the chaos and euphoria and gurdiness of the original Hurdy Gurdy Song, only twice as much of it - more chaos, more euphoria and much more gurdiness.

The original was always a certified banger custom made to get to No 1 in Bavaria. Now it’s been remixed by the hottest band from Germany’s largest state, Mothers of the New Stone Age. In a cultural exchange that has been officially twinned with Local Psycho) into (nearly) six minutes of stunning slow motion sound, completely reimagining the original's addictive madness as a super heavy low frequency medieval ambient dub.

Finally, the Stone Club mix sees the people behind the country's hottest megalithic fanclub deconstruct and pull and reshape The Hurdy Gurdy Song before adding trippy vocal samples and seismic distortion to create a spaced out spiritual ambient dronescape that stretches out over twenty plus minutes of supreme, beautiful, horizontal oddness.
